What is Mississippi Scholars? The Mississippi Scholars Initiative is a business-driven, community-led program that encourages students to take challenging courses throughout their four years of high school. Research has demonstrated that completing rigorous courses in high school is the strongest predictor of college and workplace success. The State Scholars Initiative was created to address a particular reality: Our businesses and our economy are demanding more of workers – more skill, a more flexible knowledge base and, above all, a greater capacity to learn. The Mississippi Scholars Course of Study gives students the foundation they need to succeed regardless of the path they choose after high school. Click Link to Open PDF File

A 2.5 cumulative high school GPA 3. 95% School Attendance during 4 years of high school 4. Letter of recommendation from principal or guidance counselor 5. Mississippi Scholars must also complete the remaining state-mandated high school graduation requirements. Parents Involvement When parents get involved in education, their kids do better in school. A parent’s encouragement and support are essential in helping a student achieve their academic goals. In the 8th grade, each student will prepare a four-year Scholar Course of Study plan with the help of parents and school counselors. Parents work with school counselors and teachers to help their children meet Scholars’ course requirements. In this way, parents help ensure that students are prepared for the workforce or higher education upon graduation from high school. Community Involvement Mississippi Scholars is a partnership between local schools and the business communities. Business leaders along with members of civic organizations - such as chambers of commerce – work with local educators to create and implement the program in their communities. Mississippi Scholars is unique because trained local business leaders go into the classroom to motivate and encourage students to make the right course choices. They share with them occupation and wage information and the qualities that an employer values in an employee. This critical message is delivered to 8th grade students’ right before they select their courses for 9th grade. Educators, businesspeople, and community leaders work together to motive students, creating incentives, providing support, and recognizing Scholars success at each step along the way. |
