The State Department of Education and State Superintendent Dr. Tom Burnham recognized the Brookhaven Lincoln County Mississippi Scholars team on Friday during the state Board of Education meeting. The group appeared before the state Board along with Mississippi Economic Council President Blake Wilson and received certificates of recognition for its outstanding community partnership. Earlier this year Brookhaven Lincoln County awarded $106,000 in college scholarships to 96 of the 168 participating seniors from both public and private schools in Lincoln County. Since it began in 2006, the Brookhaven Lincoln County Mississippi Scholars program has awarded $256,000 in scholarships

Statewide, Mississippi Scholars is a highly successful initiative where community and business leaders are trained to make classroom presentations to speak directly with students about the importance of rigorous course work and how strong education benefits their employees in the workplace.   The program has grown from 2 school districts and 24 high school graduates in 2003-2004 to 76 school districts throughout Mississippi, with over 14,000 graduates.

Through Mississippi Scholars, the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber and Scholars Chairman Kenny Goza are working closely with the area’s schools to raise the level of expectation for students and parents. The goal is to build a strong comprehensive school-community partnership for all stakeholders to enhance their community.

Wal-Mart is the major sponsor of Mississippi Scholars, and AT&T sponsors the medallions given to Scholar’s graduates.
